After shrugging into his jacket, Deacon grabbed his sunglasses and keys and was heading out the front door when his cell phone started vibrating in his pocket.

Narrowing his eyes at a number he didn’t recognize, he decided to answer it anyway. “Yeah?”

“Deacon. It’s August Mortlake.”

Deacon paused at the front door. “Councilor Mortlake? Is there a problem?”

August laughed. “Oh no. No problem. I’m sorry to be calling you at the last minute, but Ophelia’s event this evening has been canceled. We won’t be needing your presence tonight.”

Deacon frowned. “I hope it’s nothing serious.”

“Not at all. But since Ophelia and I have spent so little time together recently, and you haven’t had even a single night away from your duties, tonight gives me the opportunity to spend some quality time with her before she marries.”

It sounded so reasonable, so believable. But Deacon found his suspicion stirring.

“Of course. I will see you and Ophelia tomorrow night then.”

“Yes,” August said, and just like that he hung up.

For a second Deacon stared at the phone in his hand. He knew things like this happened. People canceled events at the last minute all the time, but a part of him couldn’t help but wonder why it had to be tonight of all nights. And since when had August cared about spending quality time with Ophelia?

Had August realized what he and Ophelia were about to do?

No.

If August had even the slightest idea of what they planned, there was no way he’d have called him to give him the night off. He’d be dead.

There wasn’t even a way for him to reach Ophelia to speak to her, not when she didn’t have a phone, and turning up out of the blue after August’s call would only make the man suspicious.

He should have bought her a phone and helped her to hide it. At least he’d have been able to make sure she was okay, and he could convince himself his unease was paranoia and nothing more.

But there was nothing either of them could do. So, toeing off his boots, he headed for the kitchen and grabbed a beer. Tonight would be a long night. But at least everything was ready to go for tomorrow night. He’d have a few beers, get takeout and watch TV.

It was one more night after all, and in the grand scheme of things one night wouldn’t change anything.
